And it was only after intensive therapy at an Arizona clinic where nobody knew who he was, that the wild-haired rocker could overcome his depression and rebuild his relationship and career.

Speaking to the Sunday Express magazine Sx2, May said: "I was very wounded and very much in pieces. I think I did get brain-fried and I went into serious depression.

"The band finished, so there was a terrible feeling of loss, and the band was my family so I kind of lost them too. We lost Freddie, my Dad died at almost the same time and my marriage broke up.

"I was really not wanting to live. I'd lost myself completely."

Now May says he is feeling great and more balanced than ever before and he is happily married to former EastEnder, Anita Dobson, his partner of 14 years.
